To be able to create our own narratives is something that Black women weren't always able to do, which is why now, when we see it in the media it is important to recognize it, highlight it and celebrate it. For this reason, in honor of Black History Month and to celebrate Black women everywhere, I chose to visually analyze six images of Black women in recent news and magazine publications.
The purpose of a visual analysis is to recognize and understand the visual choices an artist haas made in creating the artwork and how it communications ideas, content, or meaning. A visual analysis addresses an artwork’s formal elements—visual attributes such as color, line, texture and size. More specifically as it pertains to the project below, a visual analysis may also include historical context or interpretations of meaning. Each one these women depicted in the images are unapologetically existing, taking up space and asserting visual narratives that go beyond the parameters society has placed on them.
